Fauci destroys Rand Paul

Rand Paul accused Dr. Fauci of killing millions of Americans. Yesterday, Fauci had enough. And brought the receipts.

Dr. Anthony Fauci just destroyed Rand Paul at a US Senate hearing yesterday, and I’ve got the video to share with you.

Fauci destroys Paul

Rand Paul, and more generally, the Republicans, have been going after Dr. Fauci for almost two years now. Fauci, you’ll recall, was the only person in the Trump administration — he’s a career official, not a political appointee — who was willing to publicly disagree with Trump’s lies about Covid. This drove Trump crazy, and the Republicans chose early on to demonize Fauci as part of their larger campaign to downplay the pandemic and its concomitant policies (vaccines, masks, testing, social distancing).

And while I can understand (though disapprove of) the desire to undercut Fauci during Trump’s time in office — they were desperate to do anything they could to distract from Trump having just killed hundreds of thousands of Americans through his lies and inaction — I don’t entirely get the ongoing effort to demonize Fauci. Then again, I also don’t get why Republicans are STILL trying to convince people not to get vaccinated or tested. Fox News the other day (Tucker Carlson, of course), even claimed that the booster would GIVE YOU COVID. Having said that, I still don’t get how it benefits Republicans to literally get their own voters killed. If you have any ideas, please weigh in via the comments below.

So, Rand Paul has been particularly targeting Fauci, accusing him of having helped create the Covid virus (that’s a lie), and of having perjured himself before Congress (another lie). Well, yesterday, Fauci had enough. And brought the receipts. I don’t even need to set this up. Just watch.

Absolutely delicious.

Oh, and Rand Paul is the one who went on Fox News the other day and claimed that the vaccine doesn’t work at all, and that most people hospitalized with Covid are vaccinated. That’s 100% false, see below. David Pakman has the clip, about 1m30 into his video:

In fact, the overwhelming majority of people in the hospital with Covid are unvaccinated. Here are the papers from around the country in the last couple of weeks:

And my personal favorite, the local Kentucky newspaper, the state that Rand Paul represents:

Also, there’s some new data on hospitalizations and deaths from Covid among the vaccinated and the not-fully-vaccinated. Not surprisingly, there’s a much higher rate of hospitalization and death among those who are not fully vaccinated:

And here is the data on deaths:

Which again brings us back to the question of why Republicans are lying. The usual reason is money and/or votes. The GOP thinks they can win more votes by convincing people that the government’s response to Covid was heavy-handed, I guess. It’s certainly revving up their base, which means more votes and more money from the cultists. But how crass do you have to be to intentionally kill your own voters in order to win elections?

It’s one more sign of the creeping fascism that has long stalked, and now overtaken, the Republican party.

Sasha’s cone of shame is back

My dog Sasha had a growth removed from her eyelid, and we thought we were done with the cone of shame right before Christmas. But alas, it’s back. It seems the stitches started irritating her eye, so after a pricey vet visit, the little girl is unhappy with me again.

I guess after 50 years of mocking science and experts and teachers and facts and the government and medicine and don't trust anyone, the Republicans can't suddenly pivot and embrace science.

The more we see of Rand Paul, the more I admire his next door neighbor.
